Motivational Tips For Small Business Owners

Being a small business owner can be a challenging and rewarding experience. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to keep your business running smoothly, and it's easy to feel overwhelmed sometimes. However, staying motivated is critical to achieving your goals and building a successful business. Here are some tips on how to stay motivated as a small business owner.

Over the years, I have found that motivation is necessary at times.  While at other times, it's just a desire or thought.  Motivation will only sometimes be present.  It does not mean letting go of your goals and why you started.

As a believer, I understand that my perseverance can bless those around me or act as a conduit.  Giving up will not cut it.  In a perfect world, I want to be motivated every day.  I want to share some tips with you to navigate around the times when motivation is present or not.

Tips For Motivating Yourself #1: Set Clear Goals

One of the best ways to stay motivated is to set clear goals for yourself and your business. Start by defining your long-term vision for your business and then break it down into smaller, achievable goals. This will give you a sense of direction and purpose and help you stay focused on the things that matter most.

You have to know what’s the best way for you to look at your business goals.  I like to create bite-sized, manageable goals and long-term goals.  For example, I aim to help 40 businesses with their Honeybook setup in Q1 2023.  Our big hairy goal for 2023 is supporting over 100 companies with effective systems.  Looking at the 100 companies' goal daily may seem daunting compared to aiming to get 12 new clients a month.

Tips For Motivating Yourself #2: Celebrate Your Wins

As a small business owner, it's essential to take time to celebrate your wins, no matter how small they may be. Celebrating your successes can help you stay motivated and remind you of your progress. Take time to acknowledge your accomplishments and reward yourself for your hard work.

You can do this with a gratitude journal, accountability partner, or celebration jar.  I have implemented all of these in my daily practices.  At times, I can minimize the progress happening daily.  The celebration jar was bought from Target and I use Post-It notes to insert my wins.

Tips For Motivating Yourself #3: Surround Yourself With Positivity

Surrounding yourself with positive people and resources can help you stay motivated as a small business owner. This includes finding a mentor or coach who can provide guidance and support and seeking out positive and uplifting books, podcasts, and social media accounts. Confounding yourself with positivity can help you maintain a positive mindset and stay focused on your goals.

I’m grateful for my inner circle.  Positive conversations are fed through positivity.  Negative conversations are provided through negativity.  I’m particular about my ear and eye gates.  I recommend doing an inventory on your circle of influence.

Tips For Motivating Yourself #4: Keep Learning and Growing

To stay motivated, it's essential to keep learning and growing as a small business owner. This means staying up-to-date with the latest trends and developments in your industry, attending networking events and conferences, and seeking educational resources to help you improve your skills and knowledge.

Often, I will share my favorite books or current reading lists on Instagram or YouTube.  I aim to read for 15 minutes daily before the day starts.  Plus, I like to listen to podcasts or Audible in the car.  My biggest regret was not looking into certifications in the events industry.  I’m now working on gaining my Business Analyst certification to help further my career.

Tips For Motivating Yourself #5: Stay Organized and Manage Your Time Effectively

Staying organized and managing your time effectively can help you stay motivated and focused as a small business owner. This means creating a schedule and to-do list to keep yourself on track, prioritizing your most important tasks, and delegating responsibilities when necessary. A clear plan and structure can help you stay motivated and achieve your goals more efficiently.

I love hosting my free Honeybook workshops to help other entrepreneurs create systems for organizing their back office structure.  It is common for people to lose motivation in spaces where mayhem and confusion exist.  A small group of people can truly function in the mayhem.

Tips For Motivating Yourself #6: Take care of yourself:

Make sure you're taking care of yourself physically and emotionally. Eat well, exercise, and take time for yourself.  Self-care is not optional in my life.  A lack of self-care can be the fastest way to burn out and lose motivation.

You can define self-care as a nap.  It can even be saying “no” to a possible great opportunity.  We fall victim to saying “yes” to everything to find it at the sacrifice of our happiness.

In conclusion, staying motivated as a small business owner is about setting clear goals, celebrating your wins, surrounding yourself with positivity, learning and growing, staying organized, and managing your time effectively. By implementing these strategies into your daily routine, you can stay motivated and focused on building a successful and fulfilling business.
