Decluttering Your Home… Starting With Your Makeup!

makeup haul

A few weeks ago, I found myself looking at my makeup drawer in complete shock. Yes! I love decluttering and providing tips for others to declutter their lives. I’m not perfect by no means.

I do find myself sucked into the Youtube makeup haul rabbit hole. Some way, I find myself at UltaSephora, or CVS for new inspiration. I was shocked by how disorganized my makeup collection.

Today, I want to share with you decluttering tips for your makeup collection. I knew this was a taboo topic. I don’t remember my mother or grandmother ever throwing away makeup. LOL. I can’t be the only one in that category. The critical tips for decluttering your makeup collection are functionality, checking expiration dates, and creating your essential lineup.

Prioritize What You Need

Makeup is one easiest thing to allow to pile up. One lipstick tube does not take up a ton of space. Forty makeup tubes become more noticeable. Every woman has a way of expressing their beauty or makeup routine. If we are honest, makeup and “perfect” image is pushed on us heavy now. New colors and shades are always coming out to create a constant need for a new shade palette.

The first step to decluttering your makeup is prioritizing what you have. Do you need 20 makeup palettes? Do you need ten nude shade lip glosses? No one can answer that question except for you. You can see from my Youtube video that my collection included professional makeup cases and drawers filled with makeup. I didn’t need 75% of those items.

Chunk Your Expired Products

Makeup does not last forever! You read that right. You very well have been using expired make up for some time.  Cream, liquid, and gel products expire within 3-6 months from opening. It can be tempting to hold onto the products. I find mascara and lip glosses can be the most accessible culprits in expired products. Stop the madness by holding onto expired makeup.

Makeup facts:

  • Concealers - 1 year

  • Liquid Foundation - 1 year

  • Cream Blush - 1 year

  • Eyeliner - 3 months

  • Eyeliner Pencil - 2 years

  • Eye Shadow - 1 year

  • Lip Balm/Gloss - 1 year

  • Lipstick - 2 years

  • Powder Blush - 2 years

  • Mascara - 3 months

Keep Your Essentials

It may seem harsh to throw away makeup. While decluttering, ask yourself honest questions on what you use or deem as essential. You may have your favorite go-to lipsticks and eye shadows, which are your holy grail makeup combo for a quick 10-minute look. The essentials are items used regularly.

Conclusion

Knowing is half the battle. Expired makeup can be the root of skin irritations and breakouts. You will find decluttering your makeup will help saving money on products that will expire anyway. Additionally, you will find yourself getting more use out of what you buy.

I challenge you to go through your makeup and do a purge. Please take a picture and tag me. I’m here to support you in conquering this task.
